    Lead aprons and protective clothing

X-ray aprons and thyroid collars are worn for hours at a time by people of every build. What matters is that each one still fits properly at the end of the shift. That is why PLUMBARY makes them to measure.

    The challenge

    Where protective clothing falls short

    • Protection that doesn’t fit doesn’t get worn.

An apron that pinches, slips or gets in the way ends up on the hook, where it protects nobody.

Every apron and collar we make is cut for its wearer, not taken from stock.

    • A department doesn’t come in one size.

The interventionalist stands at the table throughout the procedure. The nurse moves around the room. The radiographer often works side-on to the source or turned away from it. Each needs a different cut and coverage, and all of them need an apron their back can carry through a full shift.

We tailor each piece to the person who wears it and the work they do.

    • Bought as a set, retired one at a time.

A collar tears or an apron wears through, and the rest of the set is still in good order.

We make only what needs renewing, to measure.

What PLUMBARY makes to protect people

    Worn on the body

Spend hours in lead and you feel every centimetre that doesn’t fit. We make aprons and collars to the wearer’s own measurements.

    • Protects the trunk throughout an examination. Known to many as an X-ray apron, it is used in radiology, angiography and theatre by staff who stay in the room during an exposure, and its cut and coverage are matched to the job.

    • Sits around the neck for as long as the apron is worn. The thyroid shield, as it is commonly called, closes the gap at the neckline where the gland would otherwise be exposed; it too is made to measure and can be replaced on its own.

    • Covers the head, which the apron and collar do not reach. This lead cap, or head shield, is chosen mainly for long procedures in the cath lab.

    Targeted protection

When one part of the body needs shielding of its own, a full garment would only get in the way. We make each of these pieces for the area it has to protect, singly or as a set for the whole department.

    • Covers the patient’s gonads when they lie in or near the primary beam but do not need to be imaged. Its best-known form is the testicular shield, and its counterpart for female patients is the ovarian shield; local protocol decides whether either is applied.

    • Worn when the hands have to be close to the X-ray field during an exposure. Often called X-ray gloves, they are used for fracture reduction under fluoroscopy, or to hold a patient when there is no other way, and are made in your hand size.

    • They protect the eyes from scattered radiation through long hours of work at the table. These radiation protection glasses see most use in orthopaedic surgery and in interventional cardiology and radiology.

    Set up in the room

Not all protection is worn. Your floor plan decides where the shielding stands and how wide it needs to be, and we make it to match.

    • Separates staff from the radiation source wherever there is no fixed wall. This free-standing screen is used in hot labs, X-ray rooms, cath labs and theatres.
