    Nuclear medicine shielding

From the hot lab to the waste container, every dose passes through many hands. PLUMBARY manufactures lead pigs, syringe shields, L-blocks and the rest of the shielding between hand and dose.

    The challenge

What makes nuclear medicine hard to equip

    • Every manual step needs its own shielding.

Preparation, transport, administration, disposal: staff handle radioactive material directly throughout, and what they need changes from one stage to the next.

We make the shielding for every step.

    • No two departments are laid out the same.

Bench heights, pass-throughs, routes, trolley parking: shielding must fit the room, not the other way round.

Where a standard size will not do, we build to your measurements.

    • A replacement has to fit what’s already there.

Years on, a shield needs renewing, but the bench, trolley or hatch it was designed for has not changed.

We make it to match the original, as a single part or a full repeat batch.

What PLUMBARY makes for nuclear medicine

    In the hot lab

The preparation bench is the tightest spot in the department: little space, fixed workflows, dimensions that differ from lab to lab. Whatever belongs on or around it, we make to measure.

    • Encloses the preparation workstation in the hot lab. This is where gallium-68 is eluted from the generator and used for labelling; we build each cell to house the equipment you work with.

    • Stands between the activity and the operator while a dose is drawn up. It is made in a height and width to suit your bench or fume cupboard and is also known as a bench shield.

    • Separates staff from the radiation source wherever there is no fixed wall. This free-standing screen is used in hot labs, X-ray rooms, cath labs and theatres.

    • They take the place of the hand whenever unshielded radioactive material has to be moved. We make each pair to order, choosing the length and jaws for what it will grip, be it a vial in the radiopharmacy or a calibration source.

On the way to the patient

Three syringe shields, each with a side viewing window

Between preparation and administration, a dose is carried, wheeled and set down, and every hospital has its own routes for it. We make the shielding to suit the way your department works, right up to what staff wear while the dose is given.

    • Shielded container for storing and moving radiopharmaceuticals and calibration sources within the hospital, from F-18 FDG to Co-60. Its cavity is sized to the vial, syringe or source it has to hold, and a pig made for a vial is often called a vial shield.

    • Keeps a delivery shielded on its way from goods-in to the workstation. PET centres use it for F-18 FDG and other tracers, and its insert is shaped to whatever container they arrive in.

    • Holds prepared syringes for the walk from the hot lab to the bedside. We decide with you how many it takes at a time, and in which sizes.

    • Encloses the syringe from the moment the dose is drawn up until it has been given. It is supplied to fit the syringes you work with.

    • Worn in front of the upper body while the radiopharmaceutical is being administered. Made for staff who inject patients throughout the day, it is tailored to the wearer’s measurements.

    What the day leaves behind

A large radioactive waste container on castors beside a smaller one

Every shift produces radioactive waste that can neither be left unshielded nor go straight out with the general waste. We make the containers and shielding for it, built to fit the space you have set aside.

    • Wheeled through the department to collect waste wherever it arises. As a decay container, it holds the contents until their activity has fallen far enough for disposal, and we build it to clear your doors and lifts.

    • Serves a single workstation rather than the whole department. Sized to sit on or beside the bench in the hot lab or injection room, this shielded waste bin takes swabs, gloves and empty vials as soon as they are finished with.

    • Receives used needles right at the injection chair. Unlike an ordinary sharps bin, it is shielded, because a needle can still carry traces of the radiopharmaceutical.

    • Holds the urine bag or collection bottle behind shielding, on wheels so that it moves with the patient. It is used mainly on radionuclide therapy wards; we agree its size and castors with you.

    • Kept to hand at the workstation so that a spill can be cleaned up straight away. Often simply called a spill kit, it belongs wherever unsealed sources are handled, at the bench as much as at the bedside.
